Chrono24 Buyer’s Guide: The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M

By René Herold

The Planet Ocean 600M first debuted in 2005, making it one of the younger additions to the Seamaster collection. It boasts numerous professional diving features, including a helium escape value, water resistance to 600 m (60 bar, 2,000 ft), and a modern caliber. Despite all this technical finesse, it remains notably more elegant than other tool watches on the market. To top things off, this Planet Ocean can be spotted on the wrist of none other than secret agent James Bond – a fact that has certainly boosted the model’s popularity.

The Planet Ocean series is an extensive one. You can find everything from three-hand models to GMT watches and chronographs in the lineup. There are also a number of different material options, sizes, and colors available. So, which references are the most popular? Let’s dive in.

Classic Black: The Ref. 215.30.44.21.01.001

The Planet Ocean 600M ref. 215.30.44.21.01.001 is a particular favorite among Chrono24 users. This stainless steel watch has been a valued member of the series since 2016. It measures 43.5 mm across, comes on a three-piece link stainless steel bracelet, and features a unidirectional rotating bezel with a black ceramic inlay. For the bezel scale, Omega turns to their in-house alloy Liquidmetal. The robust material is a mixture of titanium, zirconium, and copper, which gives it a unique metallic sheen. Together with the ceramic inlay, this makes the bezel both highly legible and scratch-resistant.

The case is not unlike that of the famous Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. It is slightly asymmetrical, given the right flank is wider than the left, which enables it to serve as a guard for the screw-down crown. The watch also shares the Speedmaster’s curved lugs with wide polished flanks. The additional crown for the helium escape valve at 10 o’clock, however, is more reminiscent of the Seamaster Diver 300M and lends the watch its own signature look. The watch also features a screw-down sapphire crystal case back, offering a view of the in-house caliber 8900 within.

Broad Arrow Hands and Applied Numerals

The dial sits beneath a domed sapphire crystal and is made of black ceramic to coordinate with the bezel. Omega opted for applied bar indices filled with white luminous material. The hour markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock are kept slightly shorter than the remaining indices to accommodate the date window a 3 o’clock and the Arabic numerals in the three other positions.

The hands are very similar to the famous broad arrow hands associated with the classic Seamaster 300 and several versions of the Speedmaster. This dauphine-shaped hand earns its name from its wide, arrow-shaped tip. In contrast to its sibling models, which only feature a broad arrow hour hand, the Planet Ocean boasts both broad arrow hour and minute hands. The second hand, in turn, has the typical Omega lance-style hands. It likewise features white luminous material and stands out with a bright orange tip. Omega employs the same orange tone for the Seamaster inscription beneath the Omega logo at 12 o’clock and the depth rating inscription “600 m/2000 ft” above the 6.

The Planet Ocean 600M Caliber

As mentioned, the Planet Ocean ref. 215.30.44.21.01.001 is powered by the caliber 8900. This automatic movement features Omega’s co-axial escapement, runs at 25,200 vph, and has a power reserve of 60 hours thanks to its double barrels. Moreover, the caliber is certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) as a Master Chronometer. This means it’s not only extremely accurate, but also antimagnetic to 15,000 gauss.

The rhodium-plated bridges and rotor are elaborately decorated with Geneva stripes, making the movement a real feast for the eyes.

Price and Performance of the Omega Planet Ocean 600M

As of February 2023, prices for an unworn Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M ref. 215.30.44.21.01.001 are just shy of $6,000 on Chrono24. Pre-owned watches in good condition run closer to $5,100.

The overall financial performance of this model has been very positive. Two years ago, you could purchase a mint condition model for $5,300. This corresponds to appreciation of 13%. Pre-owned examples appreciated by 18% over the same time period.

Smaller Alternatives

If the 43.5-mm diameter is too large for your tastes, Omega offers several other options. The ref. 232.30.42.21.01.001, for example, is a second generation Planet Ocean that shares many of the aesthetic features of the ref. 215.30.44.21.01.001, but measures a slightly smaller 42 mm across. The caliber 8500 ticks away inside this timepiece, but unfortunately doesn’t come with METAS certification. You can recognize this version by the fact that the orange tone is used exclusively for the Seamaster inscription and tip of the second hand. Moreover, the style of the numerals is more similar to that of the Seamaster 300. You can find unworn examples on Chrono24 for approx. $4,200.

If you’d prefer an even smaller watch and want METAS certification and a design closer to that of the 215.30.44.21.01.001, be sure to check out the Planet Ocean 600M ref. 215.30.40.20.01.001. This watch looks very similar to its larger sibling model, but only measures 39.5 mm. The Master Chronometer caliber 8800, a smaller version of the 8900, powers this timepiece. Prices for an unworn watch run around $6,300.

Material Options for the Omega Planet Ocean 600M

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M also looks great in gold.

The Planet Ocean collection offers a wide range of color and material options beyond the standard stainless steel model with a black dial and bezel. For example, you can choose from cases made of rose gold, titanium, or ceramic. Dials are available in blue, gray, brown, white, or mother-of-pearl, and come with a coordinating bezel. You’ll also find watches set with gemstones in the range.

Depending on the exact model you choose, expect to see prices between $8,000 and 25,000.

Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT and Chronograph

Since 2006, the Planet Ocean collection has also been home to several chronographs. The ref. 215.30.46.51.01.002 from the current series is one such example. Like all Planet Ocean chronographs, this watch measures 45.5 mm across and features two screw-down push-pieces in addition to the standard crowns. The watch is powered by the Master Chronometer caliber 9900, while the hands and dial design are largely similar to the three-hand version.

The biggest difference, of course, is the dial’s bicompax layout with subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock and a date window at 6 o’clock, all of which replace their respective numerals. The 12 numeral, on the other hand, remains and shines in a bright orange hue. The bezel also differs slightly from the three-hand models. While it is likewise made of black ceramic and outfitted with a Liquidmetal scale, the first 15 minutes are coated in orange rubber. Plan to spend around $8,400 on an unworn example.

The Planet Ocean GMT, in turn, features the same 43.5-mm case as the three-hand watch. The basic dial and hand design also corresponds to the standard version. The most striking distinguishing feature here, however, is the additional central GMT hand and 24-hour bezel. Older models are powered by the Co-Axial caliber 8605, while current versions like the ref. 215.30.44.22.01.001 house the Master Chronometer caliber 8906.

You have the choice between a stainless steel, titanium, or rose gold case. Depending on the version you choose, expect prices between $5,800 and 17,200.

Seamaster Planet Ocean: James Bond Edition

Secret agent James Bond has turned to Omega for his timekeeping needs since 1995. In that time, the Planet Ocean has found its way onto Bond’s wrist on numerous occasions. The Planet Ocean Skyfall ref. 232.30.42.21.01.004 is particularly popular with Bond fans and collectors. The watch is technically identical to second generation three-hand versions, i.e., it features a 42-mm stainless steel case and is powered by the caliber 8500.

The dial, on the other hand, differs quite significantly from the standard version. First, it has a grid-like pattern and features an applied 007 logo in place of the bar index at the 7 o’clock position.

The watch has a limited run of 5,007 and costs around $8,700 on Chrono24 in unworn condition.

Summary

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M is a professional grade diving watch that can be worn for more formal occasions, thanks to its elegant design. There is a wide selection of models available, ranging in size, materials, and colors. This timepiece has enjoyed stable financial performance in recent years, with some versions even appreciating significantly in value. One thing is for sure: The Planet Ocean is worth considering for your next timepiece.
