This week: Audemars Piguet Brand Week Special
Great Watches Under $5,000
Audemars Piguet Classic Day-Date
When you hear Audemars Piguet, the first thing you probably think of is the Royal Oak. However, none of the Royal Oak watches would ever show up under the heading: “Great Watches Under $5,000.” That being said, AP is so much more than the Royal Oak. This brand has a rich history that includes many amazing timepieces, including this Classic Day-Date.Its 34-mm solid gold case and elegant leather strap make the Audemars Piguet Classic Day-Date the perfect dress watch. What’s more, its automatic movement makes this timepiece a great choice for daily wear as well. As its name suggests, the Classic Day-Date features displays for both the day and date. However, these are no ordinary displays. Instead, the day and date are shown on subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock, respectively. Overall, this AP is a stylish and elegant watch from one of the most iconic brands in Switzerland.
Enthusiast’s Corner: Rare and Exceptional Timepieces
Audemars Piguet Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT
The Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT is not your average AP,not that you’d ever call any AP model “average.” This, however, is a one-of-a-kind watch for true Audemars Piguet connoisseurs. The Audemars Piguet Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT has a cool modern design, an asymmetrical 44-mm case made of sandblasted titanium, a black ceramic bezel, and a skeletonized dial. However, this timepiece is more than just good looks; it’s packed with complications, such as a GMT function at 3 o’clock. There’s also a flying tourbillon at 9 o’clock, a feature many consider the most interesting complication in haute horologerie. Of course, all of this comes with a hefty price tag, but, then again, this is no ordinary watch. The Audemars Piguet Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT is as exclusive as it gets.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ref. 5402
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak reference 5402 is the watch that started it all. Every watch fan knows the story of how this watch came to be. For the laypeople among us, let me quickly explain: In 1971, then-CEO of AP, Georges Golay, called Gérald Genta from the trade fair in Basel and commissioned a stainless steel watch for the Italian market. Genta showed up the next day with the design of the Royal Oak. Inspired by diving helmets from a bygone era, the watch had an octagonal steel case, integrated bracelet, 8 exposed screws on the bezel, a tapisserie dial, and only 2 hands. It was so revolutionary at the time (remember, we’re talking about the early 1970s) that making steel prototypes was impossible, so they were made out of white gold. A year later, Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak at the same fair in Basel, and the rest, as they say, is history.
